Electrotechnology Sector Vision

An industry-tailored skills framework is vital to constructing a dynamic workforce that reflects Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Forming strategic partnerships will guide us through economic changes and ensure sector success.

Electrotechnology powers the systems that keep Aotearoa running, from homes and businesses to industries and public infrastructure.

It’s one of the fastest-evolving sectors, bringing together Electrical Trade, Electronics, and Electronic Engineering to design, install, test, and maintain the technologies we rely on every day.

From appliances and air conditioning to telecommunications, smart tech, lifts, and data cabling, the work is technical, hands-on, and constantly in demand. The sector also extends into specialised areas like marine, security, and radio, offering diverse career opportunities across many industries.

With over 35,000 people working in the sector, 945 self-employed tradespeople, and a 32% rise in NZQF enrolments in 2023 (totalling 23,440 learners), interest is growing - and the need for skilled workers has never been stronger.

Based on what we’ve heard from across the sector, here are the four key areas guiding workforce action:
